A
brief guide
RURALnet
is an Internet-based dial-up service implemented in 2000 to give authorised
users access to systems within the NZ Fire Service network.
RURALnet
is a cost-effective way of providing secure remote access without implementing
expensive and complex Internet security systems as required in the e-commerce
world. RURALnet will only provide a connection at modem speed (up to 56Kb)
and requires a modem attached to a telephone line. This may require a
stand-alone PC or notebook as some organisations, for security reasons,
may not allow a networked PC to also have a modem.
RURALnet
uses Telecom's IPNet system which users dial into using a nation-wide
toll-free number. Telecom carries out the first level of username and
password authentication. Users are then passed on to the NZ Fire Service
network where further authentication is required to access the specific
NRFA or NZFS systems.
