A
guide to understanding and interpreting the Fire Weather Index information
Fire
Danger Rating
A fire danger rating
system should supply an objective answer to the question: 'What is the
probability of a fire starting, spreading and doing damage today?' It
enables fire managers to properly assess the levels of preparedness
and the suppression resources needed to keep fire losses to a minimum.
A fire danger rating system measures the variable elements which cause
day to day changes in fire risk, and interprets the information gained.
The information is used to:
define the fire season status
determine appropriate fire prevention measures
assess the likelihood of fire occurring
determine fire suppression response and resources
inform the public
make decisions to close areas at high risk
issue or cancel burn permits
plan and conduct controlled burns
FWI Model Structure
Shows how weather observations lead to the development of the
components of the Fire Weather Index.
Fire
Danger Graph
By clicking over a particular classification on the graph you
recieve an explanation of what the classification is and how difficult
it will be to control fires if these occur.
Standard
Components
The standard
components of the Fire Weather Index system providing a numerical rating
of relative wildland fire potential.
Operational Interpretation of the FWI Indices
An indication of operation actions and fire behaviour of
the different values scored against the FWI components.

how the maps are created and how they can be interpreted.
